Why Street Honey?

Street Honey was born out of frustration due to the lack of film photographers at photography meetups.. and as a distraction from my full time job. Back in 2016, I was one of the many who showed up to these large digital photography meetups with both digital and film cameras in my bag. At the time, I was just reintroduced to film photography and was in love with the format. It was so much easier and less distracting knowing that I was constricted to 36 shots that I couldn’t view till they were developed. Eager to share my love for film, I quickly realized I was no in the right circle for it. So I thought, why not create a film photography meetup group, and then Street Honey was born.

What was the moment when you found interest in photography?

The first definitive moment where I truly gravitated toward photography happened when my grandma came to visit us in Southern California when I was around 13 years of age. My grandma has been shooting photography for as long as I can remember, and as any photographer would do, she brought her full setup along with her. I was so intrigued how her photos would turn out and envied her for being the family “historian”. On that trip, she let me shoot her camera, which was the first time shooting a professional camera of that caliber and one that felt like it was a 1/3 of my weight. After reviewing the photos which felt pretty damn good at the time, I was hooked like SpongeBob when he took the bait (IYKYK).

When did you start film and why did you stick with film photography?

I actually had a film camera in my closet since I was 15, but after having no idea how to load film and destroying 2-3 rolls in the process, it sat there for years. It wasn’t until I was in college when my close buddy Omar showed me how to properly load the camera that I finally gained some confidence to use it. After successfully running a few rolls through it, I realized that film photography was more than just a format that looked cool and made me sound unique, it was a whole separate process that was slower and meditative. After taking a darkroom course and buying my own scanner, I felt like I sculpting an art piece with every roll of film I ran through. There was no turning back..
